5 simple tips to a beautifully styled maternity session.
One of the most meaningful things that I can offer to an expecting mama is a story of beautifully styled images that show how glowing and gorgeous she is and illustrate the connection she has with her baby. I believe very strongly in showing new and expecting mothers that they are lovely in every way. And I believe it is possible for everyone to have effortlessly beautiful images, even with...actually especially with, ice cream. The main concern I hear from expecting mothers about a maternity session is they want gorgeous images, but they don't want it to look cheesy and they want to feel great despite feeling somewhat like a beached whale.
There are just a few things that I think you need to get that effortless, romantic and subtle maternity session look that I love. I want to point out here that subtlety is super important to me when it comes to great maternity galleries. I don't think women walk around hugging and caressing their baby bumps in an exaggerated way like we see in a lot of maternity images, I think it's more of a gentle touch, a little gesture where baby might be kicking. Those are the poses I look for during a maternity session and they are the ones that I tend to love the most. I almost don't want the viewer to really know that it's a "maternity session" but rather that it is an effortlessly beautiful session of a gorgeous woman expecting a sweet baby.
TIP # 1 Choose a kick ass outfit that you feel amazing in.
One of the biggest pitfalls can be not choosing something ahead of time/ shopping for your anticipated 32-28 week baby belly. I have done too many sessions where mom chose something because it "was the only thing in the closet that fit." If you feel amazing, you will look amazing, every single time. I offer styling advice and will even shop for clients, so if you need help styling yourself, please reach out to me here. I am more than happy to help you help yourself feel like your best self for our session!
TIP # 2 Get your hair and makeup done.
Hey, I am one of those people that doesn't wear makeup or do my hair...ever. But I am a strong advocate of doing this simple thing for yourself before your session! Even if you feel confident doing your own hair and makeup, I still recommend going to someone else to make the experience that much more special! If you are like I was before I was in this industry and don't know where to go for hair and makeup things, I have a list of wonderful people to refer you to!
TIP # 3 Have something to hold.
Bringing a prop or coming up with an activity like eating ice cream, blueberry picking, picnicking, or reading a book can make maternity images really special and unique to the story of your life during your season of pregnancy. Every season is so different, I love styling maternity sessions with details that are meaningful to your particular stage of life! The things we do while we wait for our little ones to be born are special and I think it's important to capture!
TIP # 4 Relax
Effortless images come from a place of calm. I want you to meditate, take a bath, go for a walk, enjoy your favorite song, or get a massage before our session. I know that these things are not always possible, but think about small ways to calm yourself at least 24 hours before your session begins. I want you to be in a place where you can enjoy this season of motherhood, breathe in the moment, and consider the amazing thing that you are a part of in the here and now, growing a baby!
TIP # 5 Trust me.
Throughout our session, I will be asking you questions about your coming baby, so that we are never focusing in on "the bump" but on the real human life that you are bringing into the world. I love to celebrate baby names, how you and your partner met stories, conception stories, I want all the stories! This helps me interact with you, but more than that, it brings you to a place of intimacy as you rest into the different poses and spots I choose for us to be in. Trust me when I choose a location or spot, it will probably be somewhere that has the most flattering light to make you look your best. And trust me when I ask you these crazy things, because they always work in accomplishing my greatest hope, which I said above and I'll say again here: creating a story with beautifully styled images that show how glowing and gorgeous mama is and illustrate the connection she has with her baby.
With that, here is Janie in downtown Decatur in a glittery dress eating ice cream, I mean, this just might be every pregnant woman's dream. Enjoy!
